"I read somewhere that Apple has Verbatim manufacture their DVD-R media. Is this true?"

Originally yes, although recently I believe they have been getting media from other manufacturers as well. Ritek has been mentioned as one of these new suppliers.

Check around the edge of the disc and you can see where your discs were manufactured. There's no specific correlation between location and specific manufacturer, but it can help.
