If you have Hardware encoding, and are looking to link your AVID as a Virtual Tape machine, you can do so, if you have the proper serial port, and this cable:

Hardware:
You need a VTR Emulation cable. You can buy this from Avid or make your own. Here's the pin config:

for Mac:
8 pin mini DIN (male) DB-9 (female)
pin 6 ........................... pin 7
pin 8 ........................... pin 3
pin 3 ........................... pin 2
pin 4 ........................... pins 1 & 9 (tied together)
pin 5 ........................... pin 8
1,2,7 not used 4,5,6 Not used

for Windows:
9 Pin Male D-Sub 9 Pin Female D-Sub
Pin...Signal..........................Pin...Signal
1 Frame Ground................1 Frame Ground
2 Receive A........................8 Receive A

Software:
Connect the cable to an open serial port and enable it via an Avid
setting. Your Avid software should already have this feature.

Cost:
Unless you prefer to buy the cable from Avid, your cost is only time and
cheap materials.

Benefits:
Everything you described. We've found the best setting is to tell the
Avid to disable roll-up (so it will jump to a search timecode rather
than roll to it) and when selecting a VTR style we like Sony DVR-20.
